Holy Shorts!

Welcome to our first short article, or “Shorts” as I affectionately call them.  These articles are shorter follow ups to previous articles.  They could take the form of anything, an extra spell, a feat, or maybe a conversion to a different rule set.

After publishing the White Mage article (Do you want to know more?), I started thinking about the most iconic White Mage spell from Final Fantasy.  In most of the games Holy is basically a radiant Fireball spell, which seemed boring.  Plus a lot of design space for what Holy could do was already taken up with Sunbeam and Sunburst.  I talked it over with Trevor, and he pointed out that there aren’t a lot of cone spells in the game, which seemed like a fun place to start.

Holy (aka Sunblast)
6th-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self: (60-foot cone)
Components: V, S, M (a small flame, or magnifying glass)
Duration: Instantaneous

A blast of radiant energy erupts from your hands.  Each creature in a 60-foot cone must make a Constitution saving throw.  A creature takes 8d8 radiant damage and is blinded for 1 minute.  On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded by this spell.  Undead and oozes have disadvantage on this saving throw.

A creature blinded by this spell makes another Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns.  On a successful save, it is no longer blinded.

At Higher Levels.  When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 6th.
